The Winchendon School is perched atop the rolling hills of the school’s
Donald Ross-designed 18-hole golf course in the small, north central Massachusetts town of Winchendon. The spectacular view includes all New England has to offer: Lakes, forests, and New Hampshire’s Mt. Monadnock, the “most climbed mountain in the world.” Winchendon’s 236 acres also include a Pro Shop and driving range; an outdoor swimming pool; tennis courts; cross-country ski trails; a new ice arena with off-season sports floor; three playing fields; and, a full gymnasium with lockers, exercise equipment, and two regulation basketball courts.
Our main educational facilities include four academic buildings, with classrooms, science laboratories, and a 10,000 volume library; two arts’ buildings; seven dormitories; and several large residences for faculty, their families, and “homestay” students. Ford Hall, once the golf course’s clubhouse, is now the home of the reception area and admissions office, headmaster’s and other administrative offices, business office, dining hall, school store, dormitory, and infirmary.
Winchendon recently completed several renovation and new construction projects, designed to enhance the academics, athletics, and student life. These include:
- Rhoads Academic Building, with 10 new classrooms and a central atrium with a large fieldstone fireplace for discussion groups;
- Dining Hall, with high ceilings and table groupings conducive for continuing the discussions begun in the classroom and great acoustics for Morning Meeting, musical performances and movies;
- Ice Arena that is state-of-the-art, with an Olympic-sized rink, outstanding ice, spacious locker rooms and bleachers for the cheering fans; and
- Wireless Internet access throughout most of the campus, including the classrooms and dormitories.
Several new improvements have been completed, including:
- Redevelopment of the library into an Information Resource Center;
- Classrooms and the Science Labs upgrades;
- Fitness Center with new cardiovascular and strength-building machines,
- Visual Arts and Performing Arts Buildings will have a complete renovation; and
- New Tennis Courts.
